ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Medaille College men's volleyball team split their day at Elmira College today. In their first match against the Sage Gators, the Mavs won 3-0. In their second match, the hosts would take the match 3-0.
MATCH TWO
In game two of the day, the Mavs started off on some errors to give the Soaring Eagles a 3-0 lead.
George Muriel (Hamburg, NY, Hamburg) got a kill for the first points of the match for the Mavs.
Malachi Jackson (Cheektowaga, NY, Cheektowaga) was next up for a kill. More errors for the Mavs gave Elmira more points. An Eagles service error and a kill from
Tyler Hassell (Angola, NY, Lake Shore) gave the Mavs two in a row. At 9-12, the Eagles went on a rally and scored four in a row ending in a 9-16 score. After every point the Mavs got, the Eagles would answer with two more. Elmira takes the first set, 25-13.
It was the same as set one for the Mavs, they started off down quick 0-3. This time, their first point was from an Eagles' service error. After an attack error and two service errors from the Eagles, the Mavs found themselves down even more, 4-11. Muriel was the first to get a kill in this set for their fifth point. Elmira scored four more in a row until
Matt Dickerson (Lockport, NY, Starpoint) stopped it with a kill. The Eagles were pulling away with the lead. Jackson made it 9-20 with a kill from
Kevin Cashdollar (Clarence, NY, Clarence HS). Dickerson, Jackson, and
Brandon Smith (Lancaster, NY, Lancaster) scored the next three points for the Mavs, but the Eagles ran away with the second set, 25-12.
The Mavericks held their own early in the third set with kills from Dickerson and Hassell. Cashdollar continued to spread the offense as the Mavs tied the score up at eight from an Elmira service error. The Eagles went on a big scoring run grabbing ten of the next 11 points to take an 18-9 lead. The Mavs strung together three points in a row but could not overcome the deficit as Elmira took the third set, 25-14, and won the match 3-0.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Dickerson with five kills, Muriel with three kills and three digs, and Cashdollaw with 13 assists and two digs.
MATCH 1
The Mavs started off their day very well. They won 3-0 over the Gators going 25-17 in the first match, 25-10 in the second, and 25-16 in the third.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Jackson with nine kills, four aces, Hassell with eight kills, and Dickerson with seven kills, and two aces.
The Mavs will play their first home game of the season on Wednesday, February 16. They will face Wells for a 7:00 p.m. start.
