GREENSBURG, P.A. – The Medaille College women's basketball team traveled to the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg to take on the Bobcats for their Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game. The Mavs fell to the Bobcats 56-75 and move to 6-8 on the season.
The game started very physical with both teams trading steals until the Bobcats hit their first jumper two minutes into play. The Mavericks were unable to finish offensively and fell behind by 12 points before Freshman guard
Janell Steed (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart Academy) connected on a three-pointer to get the Mavs rolling. The Bobcats extended their lead as they went 11-15 from the field and finished the first quarter up 26-8.
The early shooting success from the Bobcats fell short in the second quarter as the Mavs began to lock them down defensively. Senior
Morgan Kennedy (Philadelphia, PA, West Catholic Prep) and Junior
Erin Hardick (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart) were able to generate some momentum early in the quarter to chip away at the Bobcat lead. With a little over five minutes left to play, the Mavs would not allow the Bobcats to score another basket as Medaille went on a 7-0 run led by Kennedy and Freshman
Ariea Garrett (Cleveland, OH, Beaumont). The Mavs trailed 21-39 going into halftime but refused to back down.
The Mavericks came out of halftime with Sophomore
Xaneya Thomas (Binghamton, NY, Binghamton) continuing the scoring streak with a made layup between multiple Bobcat defenders. The scoring run came to end shortly after, but the Mavericks tightened up on defense grabbing four more rebounds than Pitt-Greensburg. Medaille improved their shooting percentage to 54.5% (6-11) in the third quarter, but the Bobcat's three-pointers kept the Mavs from gaining any traction.
The Mavericks entered the fourth quarter trailing 38-61 before Kennedy made the opening layup. Hardick, Garrett, and Sophomore
Treanna Blenman (Brooklyn, NY, Greece Odyssey) all made the most of their opportunities the rest of the way to hang with the Bobcats. Medaille outscored Pitt-Greensburg 18-14 in the quarter but the early shooting success from the Bobcats proved to be too much to overcome.
The Mavericks went 21-60 (35%) from the field and 12-16 (75%) from the free-throw line.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Kennedy with 14 points going 4-11 from the field, 5-6 from the free-throw line, and grabbed six rebounds. Garrett reached a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds going 6-12. Hardick and Blenman both scored ten points with Hardick securing seven rebounds in the loss.
The next game for the Mavericks will be at home on Saturday, January 15 at 2:00 p.m. The Mavs will face AMCC foe La Roche University.
