Mavs Drop Final Game of Opening Tournament

Cardinals Take Men's Volleyball in Three Sets

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The Medaille College men's volleyball team finished out the Cardinal Classic tournament today against hosts, St. John Fisher. The Cardinals took the match in three sets (11-25, 18-25, 13-25.)

In the first set, the Mavericks found themselves behind 1-4 pretty quickly. They were playing from behind until a kill by Kevin Cashdollar (Clarence, NY, Clarence HS) tied up the score 7-7. The Cardinals got a kill on the next play, and held their lead again. Matt Dickerson (Lockport, NY, Starpoint) came up with a block to bring the Mavs to nine points, but this would spark a huge scoring rally for the Cardinals to end the set. The Cardinals won 25-11.

The second set started the same as the last for the Mavs. George Muriel (Hamburg, NY, Hamburg) started the scoring off with a kill from Cashdollar. They managed to stay close behind with more kills from Brandon Smith (Lancaster, NY, Lancaster) and Malachi Jackson (Cheektowaga, NY, Cheektowaga). A kill from the Cardinals at 7-12 was the start of the finale for set two. The Cardinals took this one 25-18.

The final set of the match started 0-5 in favor of the Cardinals Josh Shiflet Jr. (Mechanicsville, VA, Lee-Davis) put the Mavs on the board at 1-5. They caught a break on a Cardinal service error to give them their second point at 2-10. The Mavs had a little streak starting at 6-15. Smith had an ace, Tyler Hassell (Angola, NY, Lake Shore) and Dickerson each had kills to get to 9-16. It wouldn't be enough, and the Cardinals take the final set of the match, 25-13.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Jackson with five kills and six digs, Smith with four kills, two aces, and one block, and Cashdollar with one kill, 12 assists, and two digs.

The Mavs will travel to the 2022 Cougar Kickoff Classic on Friday, January 21 for their next match. They will start off the tournament against St. Norbert College for a start time of 8:00 p.m.
