BUFFALO, NY – The Medaille men's volleyball team continued their recent streak of dominance Monday night, setting down the Hilbert Hawks in straight sets. This would be the Mavericks' fourth consecutive win with all four coming via sweep.
The Mavs jumped out to an early (8-4) lead on the Hawks in the opening set and would run away with it, closing the first frame with a (17-2) run, taking set one (25-6).
The Mavs rode the momentum into the second set, claiming an early (8-3) advantage. The Hawks battled back and made it a five-point ballgame with the score sitting at (20-15) in favor of the Mavs. Medaille would quickly close the door on any chance of Hilbert evening up the match, finishing the Hawks in the second set, (25-17).
The third and final set was awfully similar to the opening set. Medaille jumped out to another early lead (11-3) but it would be won off of a dominant run. The Mavs would win nine straight points to make the score (21-5). On that run, seven of those points were service aces by reigning AMCC Player of the Week,
Chris Pauline Jr. (North Tonawanda, NY, North Tonawanda). Again, it would be too big of a deficit for Hilbert to overcome. The Mavs would finish off the Hawks and make the match final with a (25-11) victory.
Malachi Jackson (Cheektowaga, NY, Cheektowaga) led the Mavs in kills with nine with
Matt Dickerson (Lockport, NY, Starpoint) having seven and Pauline Jr. having six. Pauline Jr. led all Mavs with and incredible nine service aces. Five other Mavs would earn aces:
Brandon Smith (Lancaster, NY, Lancaster) (6), Dickerson (5), Jackson (3),
Jake Siwy (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca West) (1) and
Gay Doh Htoo (Rochester, NY, World of Inquiry High School) (1).
It would be a record-breaking night for the blue and gold as they finished with (25) service aces, breaking their previous single game record of (17). The win also punches the Mavs ticket into the AMCC postseason.
The Mavs are back in action Wednesday night as they cap off their home-stand with an AMCC fight with Thiel College.
