BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College men's basketball team played their first game of the season tonight, against the University at Buffalo Bulls. The Mavericks battled against the division I team, but fell, 105-54.
The Mavs were originally set to play Daemen College in a scrimmage on Monday, November 8, and the Bulls were set to play Daemen tonight. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Daemen had to drop out of both games, so the Mavericks took on the Bulls in Alumni Arena in an exhibition contest. The game was broadcast on ESPN3, a much bigger stage than they are used to.
The game started with fouls by the Mavericks. They put the Bulls' first points on the board. The Mavs were right behind them with a made layup by
Travis Sanders (Cleveland, OH, Euclid).
Rodney Graves (Woodbridge, VA, Colgan) added some more for the Mavs to keep them close behind. They kept creeping up behind the Bulls to get them within one point, 19-18, 11 minutes in. That would be the closest they would get. The Bulls pulled ahead even more, and finished the half leading 61-30.
After the half,
Jorarei Bile (Oxon Hill, MD, Oxon Hill) scored first for the Mavs off of a layup. Under 17 minutes,
Bryce Smith (College Station, TX, A&M; Consolidated) hit back-to-back three pointers to boost the energy for the Mavs.
Nick Carmichael (Ontario, NY, Wayne) nabbed a layup off of an offensive rebound to give the Mavs 48 points. They would struggle to get more from there. The Bulls ended the game winning 105-54. This was great practice for the Mavs against some really good competition. They will be able to bring a lot of positives to practice before their official first game.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Sanders with ten points and four assists, going 4-9, Graves with nine points and six rebounds, going 4-11, and
Jaqwan Washington (Bryan, TX, Bryan) with three points and four rebounds, going 1-2.
The Mavs will travel to the Mike Daley Tournament on Friday, November 12 for their first official games. They will play Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for their first matchup at 6:00 p.m.
