BUFFALO, NY – The Medaille Men's Basketball team played host to the Alfred State Pioneers Wednesday night. The Mavericks entered the Sullivan Center having lost their previous matchup against Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday.

Senior Jonathan Smith (Accokeek, MD, Clarion Area (PA)) netted the first points of the game with a wide-open three. The bucket would be Smith's fourth three-pointer this season. The opening basket would foreshadow exactly how the Mavs were going to attack the Pioneers.

The Medaille offense got rolling in the first half with the defense coming away with some key stops as well. A Kendall McGill (Largo, MD, Largo) jumper gave Medaille a (27-16) lead just around the halfway mark of the opening frame.

Shortly after, Alfred State went on a (10-0) run that closed the Maverick advantage to just three points (39-36) with two minutes to play in the half.

Both sides would head to the locker rooms with Medaille leading (46-38).

The Mavericks were relying on the shots from beyond the arc, but only managed to get seven of them to fall on (21) attempts (33.33%). Overall, the Mavs shot just above (47%) from the field.

The Mavs first points of the second half came the same way they did in the first half; a three-pointer, but this time McGill was the Mav who drained it.

The Maverick offense continued to pour it on and they didn't take their foot off of the gas pedal, sinking (55) more points in the second frame. The Mavericks took the lead on the first points of the game and never let Alfred State take the lead as the Mavs came away with a dominating (101-76) victory.

Three-point shooting was a key factor in this one as the Mavs bounced back from their efforts from beyond the arc in the first half and shot well over (50%) in the second half from three-point range (8-14).

Offensively, Rodney Graves (Woodbridge, VA, Colgan) led the Mavs with (24) points and tacked on four assists as well. McGill finished one point shy of the team lead, but had an outstanding evening totaling (23) points, shooting (9-10) from the field.

Smith continued to dominate in the paint, adding on (17) more points to his season total with a solid eight rebounds. Brandon Roach (Buffalo, NY, Frederick Law Olmsted) and Brock Kroening (Sanborn, NY, Starpoint) were key pieces to the Medaille win as well, finishing with (13) and (10) points, respectively.

Next up for the Mavs will be Mount Aloysius on Monday, January 20th. Medaille will hit the road for another AMCC battle with the Mounties. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
