ROCHESTER, NY - The Medaille College Men's Volleyball team finished up their weekend with a match against #8 Nazareth College.

Nazareth was the host school of the Golden Flyers Invitational and entered the contest with an unblemished (11-0) record.

Medaille came into the match reeling after losing a hard fought five set match against #15 Elmira College.

The Mavericks were up for the challenge though, knocking of Nazareth in a nail-bighting four set affair (25-21, 26-24, 17-25, 27-25).

The Mavericks won the first set convincingly, behind the strong play of senior S David Riggsby (Centerville, OH, Centerville High School). Riggsby had (4) kills and (7) assists in the set with a perfect (1.000) hitting percentage.

It looked as if the Golden Flyers were going to even up the score in the second set as they had a (24-22) lead. The Mavericks rallied late though and took a (2-0) lead with a (26-24) win. (2) of Nate Schneider's (Lockport, NY, Lockport High School) (4) kills in the set came during the (4-0) Medaille run at the end of the set.

Nazareth took the third set easily (25-17), outhitting Medaille (.269) to (.120) in the set.

Medaille was determined to not let another match slip away though and pulled out the fourth set in dramatic fashion (26-24). Schenider and Calvin Crosby (Pendleton, NY, Starpoint High School) led the way with (4) kills apiece in the set.

Schneider and Crosby led the attack in the match. Schneider had a team high (11) kills. Crosby had (10) kills and a team high (8) digs.

David Hill (Clarence, NY, Clarence High School) had (8) kils and (7) digs in the win. Riggsby had (32) assists.

"The fact that we beat an undefeated, 8th ranked team in their gym is remarkable," head coach Keith Koch said following the win. "It's even more impressive because we came back after losing a five-set match to Elmira earlier in the day. The seniors stepped up as leaders and our new players are starting to understand what it takes to win big matches. It was a great team win but now we need to build on what we learned this weekend and play even better the rest of the year."

The loss dropped Nazareth to (11-1).

The win improves Medaille to (2-8) overall but should give them some confidence heading into their first NEAC weekend.
