BUFFALO, NY - The 10th ranked Medaille men's volleyball team hung on for a hard fought win over 5th ranked and defending National Champion Nazareth College this evening in the Sullivan Center. The Mavs battled to a (3-2); (25-19, 15-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-12) victory over the Golden Flyers in their home opener.
In a contest that saw the teams flip flop sets throughout the match, the Mavs found themselves on top as they outlasted the Golden Flyers (15-12) in the deciding set. A dominant force throughout for Medaille was
Trevor Barrett who pounded home a match high (19) kills, while serving up a match best (5) service aces. Also coming up big in the win was
Erin Kelly who hit with precision, finishing with (12) kills while hitting at a (.450) clip.
Junior
Aaron Woomer guided the Maverick offense to the tune of (37) assists while
Brandon Kilijanski was staunch defensively, finishing with a match best (20) digs.
The Mavs found themselves down by three points early in the fifth set but rallied to tie the set at (9-9). After a Nazareth timeout the Mavs struck for two straight to grab an (11-9) lead which prompted the Nazareth bench to call for another timeout, but to no avail as the Mavs would hang on for the critical victory in both teams UVC opener.
The win is the fourth straight for Medaille and it pushes their overall record to (4-1) while they open UVC play at (1-0). They will head to Greenville, PA to take part in the Thiel College Invitational where they will face Fontbonne University and the College of Mt. St. Joseph on Friday (2/3) at 6:30pm and 8:30pm respectively.
