Mavs win thriller in overtime (117-111)

BUFFALO, NY – The Medaille College Men's Basketball team took on Pitt-Bradford Wednesday night at the Sullivan Center. Entering play, the Mavs sported a record of (12-9) overall and had a conference record of (9-5). Pitt-Bradford entered play with a record of (3-18) overall and (2-12) in conference.

Jalen Smith (Batavia, NY, Batavia) got the scoring started for Medaille with a nice three point basket to take the lead early after Bradford jumped out (2-0) to start the game. After nine minutes of play the Mavs and the Panthers were tied (19-19) with Meghale Ford (Laurel, MD, Theodore Roosevelt (DC)) leading the Mavs with (8) points. Closely behind him was Jalen Smith who had (6). Mike Hollenbeck (Ontario, NY, Wayne Central) recorded (8) points mid-way through the half but Medaille trailed (28-25). Medaille would enjoy a five point lead but the Panthers went on a (10-2) run to reclaim the lead from the Mavs. The score sat at (46-44) with two minutes to go in the half. Pitt-Bradford continued to keep up the pressure and took a (52-49) lead over Medaille into the locker room.

Meghale Ford led the Mavs with (13) points and Jalen Smith had (10). Mike Hollenbeck also had (10) points and (4) rebounds. Jonathan Smith (Accokeek, MD, Clarion Area (PA)) pulled down (6) rebounds for the Mavs.

Out of the gate the Panthers grew their lead over the Mavs until about seven minutes in. The Mavs took a slim lead over the Panthers but Bradford came right back and tied the game at (64). Keeping with the theme of the game, the two teams were tied at (74) with ten minutes to go in the game. The rest of the half was back and forth and Medaille ran into some bad luck. The Mavs committed two technical fouls which led to four Bradford points along with a Jalen Smith three pointer being taken away because his foot was on the out of bounds line. At the end of the half the score was tied (102-102).

Hollenbeck put up (29) points and added (8) rebounds. Jonathan Smith notched (12) rebounds along with (12) points. Medaille looked to hold off the Panthers in the upcoming overtime period and claim victory.

In the overtime period the Mavs came out with a purpose. They applied constant pressure and displayed excellent discipline. The Mavs came out victorious by a score of (117-111).

Hollenbeck finished the day with an impressive (32) points. Meghale Ford finished up with (21) points along with Jalen Smith who had (16). Jonathan Smith pulled down (13) boards for the Mavs and Jalen Smith led the way with (8) assists.

With the win the Mavs improve to (13-9) overall and (10-5) in the AMCC Bradford falls to (3-19) and (2-13) in the AMCC.

The (117) point performance by the Mavs set a school record for most points scored in a single game. The previous record of (116) was set back on February 5th, 2011 when the Mavs defeated Mount Aloysius College (116-113) in overtime.

The Mavs will be back in action Saturday when they play host to Mount Aloysius College at the Sullivan Center for Autism Speaks Day. The seniors will also be honored at the Senior Day ceremonies preceding the game.
