MARIETTA, OH – The Medaille College Men's Basketball team squared off this evening with #12 Marietta College in the NCAA Tournament First Round.
This marked the fourth time the Mavericks made it to the NCAA Tournament and the first time in three seasons.
Cooper Calzonetti led the
Mavs with (15) first half points.
He finished with a
team high (20) points.The Pioneers had a huge first half going up (66-41). Marietta started the second half on another large run and went on to win (120-81).
Marietta jumped out to an early (16-2) lead in the opening five minutes of play.
The Mavericks cut the lead back to single digits (18-9) on a
Chris Willingham (Nashville, TN, East Literature) three-pointer with (13:56) remaining in the first half.
The Pioneers extended their lead to fifteen points (28-13) on a Garrett Stephenson jumper just before the midway point of the first half.
Medaille cut back into the Pioneers' lead though, getting to within seven points (32-25) on a
Cooper Calzonetti (Neptune, NJ, Neptune High School) layup at the (7:46) mark of the first half.
The Pioneers did not let Medaille get any closer though in the first half, as they got very hot shooting the basketball.
Marietta finished the half on a (31-16) run to end the half with a (25) points lead (66-41).
The Pioneers were (10-19) from three-point range in the first half, helping to account for their (25) point lead.
Marietta's bench outscored Medaille's bench (17-0) in the first half.
Jammal Coleman wrapped
up his career with
(18) points in tonight's game.Cooper Calzonetti led the Mavs with (15) first half points.
Marietta had a pair of players with (15) points in the first half: Luis Garcia and Eddy Grenert.
The Pioneers started off the second half by hitting three-pointers on their first three possessions to stretch the lead to (75-43).
Marietta started the second half on a (17-2) run in the opening four minutes to extend their lead to (83-43).
Marietta cracked triple digits at the (9:44) mark of the second half, going up (101-55) on a layup by Jack Thome.
The lead was too much for Medaille to overcome, as the Pioneers went on to win (120-81) to advance to the second round of the tournament.
"Obviously we are disappointed with the final result of this evening's game. We needed to play our best tonight and we certainly fell short of that goal," head coach
Mike Blaine said following the loss. "However, we are proud that we continued to play as hard as possible and stayed together. Those qualities helped us win an AMCC Championship which we will always remember."
They will face off tomorrow with Wooster. Wooster was victorious in the opening matchup of the night, beating Misericordia (84-59).
Medaille was led by seniors Cooper Calzonetti and
Jammal Coleman (Rochester, NY, Aquinas Institute) in the loss.
Calzonetti had a team high (20) points, shooting (7-9) from the field and (4-4) from three-point range.
Coleman had (18) points, going (5-15) from the floor and (8-10) from the free throw line.
The loss drops Medaille to (19-8) on the season and closes the book on the 2014-15 season.
Senior Jammal Coleman ends his illustrious Medaille career with a program record (1740) points.
