BUFFALO, NY - In a game where the Mavericks had multiple double digit leads, it would come down to the last play of the game to decide the victory. After preventing the Lions from tying the game with a buzzer beating three pointer, the Mavs finished the game with a (70-67) victory.
Early in the game, the Mavericks jumped out to a big lead as they led by as many as eight just five minutes into the game and they held a double digit lead after eight minutes into the game. After a few turnovers and sloppy possessions late in the first half, the Lions were able to climb back into the game and bring the 14 point Maverick lead down to a single possession.
The Mavericks would take a 37-32 lead into halftime mainly because of their offense. They shot 52% (13 of 25) from the floor including 71.4% (5 of 7) from behind the three point line. While the Lions did hit over 44 percent from the field as well in the opening half, they couldn't keep up with the Mavs.
The second half was much closer on both sides of the ball. Medaille continued their hot shooting as they again hit on 52% (10 of 19) from the floor in the second half. Their ten turnovers continued to allow the Lions a chance to tie the game late but their defense made the plays it needed to when it mattered.
After Medaille hit one of two from the free throw line, the Lions had twenty seconds to make a play down by three. After two contested three pointers, Medaille grabbed the final rebound as the time expired to give themselves the three point victory.
The Mavs were led by
Jammal Coleman who totaled (17) points and (5) rebounds while
Chris Willingham finished with (11) points and (5) assists.
Ryan Grandits also added (11) points in the victory.
The Mavs (9-11, 8-5) will travel to Altoona, PA on Saturday to host Penn State-Altoona at 2 p.m.
