Freshman Matt Dempsey had (49) combine assists on Friday night.ROCHESTER, NY – The Medaille College Men's Volleyball team traveled to the campus of Nazareth College on Friday night to take on the Kingsmen of Cal Lutheran, and the Soaring Eagles of Elmira College. Both matches turned out to be five set thrillers, as Medaille defeated Cal Lutheran (3-2; 25-19, 22-25, 14-25, 28-26, 15-10) before falling to Elmira (3-2; 21-25, 25-15, 24-26, 25-16, 15-12).
Game one of the evening saw the Mavericks take on the Kingsmen of Cal Lutheran, looking for win number ten in a row after last night's (3-1) victory. The match started off as well as you can plan it for Medaille, as the Mavericks hit at an incredible clip in set number one. The Mavericks didn't commit one attacking error in the opening set, finishing with a (.652) hitting percentage en route to a (25-19) win.
Cal Lutheran answered in sets two and three, putting the Mavericks on the ropes by taking a (2-1) lead heading into set number four.
After a (29-27) marathon set last night, the Mavs decided to do it again, this time with a slightly different result.
It was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team letting each other run away. After a kill from
Brad Schneider (Lockport, NY, Lockport) and a block from
Calvin Crosby (Pendleton, NY, Starpoint) gave Medaille a (10-7) advantage, the Kingsmen rattled off six straight points to regain the lead at (13-10). From that moment on, neither team was able to earn more than three points in a row, as both teams knew what was at stake.
For Cal Lutheran a win in the fourth set ensured their fifth win of the season, for the Mavs it would force a decisive fifth set and one more chance extend their winning streak.
The Kingsmen had match point after going up (25-24); however, the Mavericks earned four of the last five points to tie things up with a (28-26) win.
Medaille ended the first match of the night just as they started, putting on an offensive clinic. The Mavs hit at a (.462) clip to take the final set (15-10) and improves to (18-7). Crosby and Brad Schneider led Medaille with (13) kills each, while
Nate Schneider (Lockport, NY, Lockport) (9),
Jack Hagerty (Wheatfield, NY, Niagara Wheatfield) (8),
Sam Bloomberg (Lake Worth, FL, Park Vista) (7), and
Pete McKelvey (Buffalo, NY, Canisius) (7) all had at least seven as well.
Freshman Matt Dempsey dished out a team high (28) assists, while
Nate Schneider (Lockport, NY, Lockport) and senior
Joe Hacherl (Tonawanda, NY, St, Joseph's CI) led the blue and gold with (10) digs as the Mavs got ready to take on the ninth ranked Elmira Soaring eagles immediately after.
It was the third time in 2016 that the Mavericks and Soaring Eagles have faced off against one another, with each side claiming victory once. It was only fitting that the tiebreaker between the two went a full five rounds, with the Soaring Eagles taking the match (3-2; 21-25, 25-15, 24-26, 16-25, 12-15).
The Mavericks were able to take two of the first three sets from the number nine ranked team in the country, setting up for an exciting finish. Unfortunately after coming out on the right side of a five set thriller just an hour or so prior, the Mavs this time found themselves on the short end.
McKelvey led Medaille with (11) kills in the second match of the night, with Bloomberg and Hagerty chipping in with (9) a piece. Hacherl paced the blue and gold with (12) digs; while Crosby and Brad Schneider both had a team high (3) service aces as Elmira snapped the Mavericks (10) game winning streak.
The Mavs will be right back at things tomorrow afternoon when they host the number (10) ranked team in the country, Vassar College, to the Sullivan Center at 1:00pm.
