Junior Calvin Crosby had a team high (20) kills on Saturday afternoon.UTICA, NY – The Medaille College Mavericks Men's Volleyball team traveled to Utica, New York on Saturday afternoon to take part in the third NEAC Crossover of the season. The Mavericks came into today riding a wave of momentum, and that momentum continued with a sweep of SUNY Polytechnic (3-1; 26-24, 25-21, 24-26, 25-11) and Wells College (3-0; 25-16, 25-21, 25-20).
Medaille's first match of the afternoon saw them face a Wildcat team that came into Saturday's contests sitting in second place in the NEAC standings with a (6-2) record. The Mavericks, looking to keep their perfect conference record intact, did just that with a hard fought four-set win over SUNY Polytechnic.
Set number one saw the Mavericks squeeze out a close (26-24) win to take a (1-0) lead. Set two didn't require extra points, but was just as close as Medaille took a (2-0) lead after besting the Wildcats (25-21). After SUNY Poly took set three, the Mavs secured their eighth conference win of the season with a dominant (25-11) set number four.
Five different Mavs had at least five kills in the first match of the afternoon, with senior
Jack Hagerty (Wheatfield, NY, Niagara Wheatfield) leading the way with (9). Senior
Nate Schneider (Lockport, NY, Lockport) and junior
Calvin Crosby (Pendleton, NY, Starpoint) both chipped in with (8) kills apiece, and senior
Joe Hacherl (Tonawanda, NY, St, Joseph's CI) paced Medaille with (15) digs improving Medaille to (13-7) overall on the season.
The Mavs didn't have much time to rest, as they turned right around to face the Express of Wells College right after their first match. The Mavericks offense was outstanding in match number two, never dipping below a (.235) hitting average as a team for the (3-0; 25-16, 25-21, 25-20) victory.
Nate Schneider finished the match against Wells with a double-double, recording (11) kills and a team high (12) digs. Crosby finished the match one kill shy of his season high with (12), leading the Mavericks in that category.
The freshmen duo of
Matt Dempsey (Clarence, NY, Clarence) and
Brad Schneider (Lockport, NY, Lockport) also had very good days passing the ball, with Schneider dishing out a combined (38) assists and Dempsey edging him out by one with (39).
Medaille will wrap up the third NEAC Crossover weekend tomorrow afternoon at 12:00pm when they face the Wolfpack of Keuka College.
