Senior Jack Hagerty had (7) kills and (4) blocks Sunday against Wells.BUFFALO, NY – The Medaille College Men's Volleyball team capped off a perfect NEAC Crossover weekend on Sunday afternoon, defeating the visiting Express of Wells College (3-1; 25-15, 25-20, 23-25, 25-21).
The Mavs picked up this afternoon right where they left off last evening, dominating the opening set after a bit of a slow start. The Express went up (5-2) early; however, an (8-2) run quickly shifted the lead Medaille's way aided by two
Brad Schneider (Lockport, NY, Lockport) service aces and two
Nate Schneider (Lockport, NY, Lockport) kills.
Wells cut the lead to as little as (1) mid-way through the opening set, but a (15-7) closing to the set secured a (25-25) win for Medaille going into the second set.
Set two saw the Mavs jump out to a quick lead, this time with the Express mounting the comeback. Strong play down the stretch from senior
Jack Hagerty (Wheatfield, NY, Niagara Wheatfield), and timely errors by Wells helped the Mavs take a (2-0) lead with a (25-20) set victory going into the third set.
Set three was closely played throughout and this time the Express were able to come away with the victory, avoiding the sweep with a (25-23) win.
Set four found the Mavs take control early, with a pair of
Pete McKelvey (Buffalo, NY, Canisius) kills giving Medaille a (12-7) lead. The lead grew to (16-9) after a Brad Schneider service ace when the Express started to chip away at the lead.
Wells went on an (8-2) run getting the deficit within (17-18) before the Mavs rattled off three in a row to regain control of the set. From there it was a battle of will, as Medaille buckled down to edge the Express (25-21) in the fourth and final set.
Nate Schneider (15) kills and (3) service aces, and Brad Schneider (14) kills and (4) service aces led Medaille offensively. Freshman
Matt Dempsey (Clarence, NY, Clarence) also paced the Mavs with (34) assists as they improved their overall record to (7-3).
Hagerty and junior
Calvin Crosby (Pendleton, NY, Starpoint) both added (4) blocks each on the defensive end to help Medaille stay undefeated in NEAC play with a (3-0) record.
The Mavs will be back in action this Wednesday in the Sullivan Center when they host NEAC foe Hilbert College. The match is scheduled for 7:00pm.
