Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Mavs Make The Fourth Quarter Exciting in Loss to Morrisville

Field Hockey Loses 3-2 to Mustangs

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Medaille University field hockey team lost to the Morrisville Mustangs in their first away game of the season tonight. The Mavericks lost 3-2.

The game started with an early foul by the Mavs that gave the Mustangs their start on offense. They took their first shot of the game very early on, but it went wide. After numerous fouls and a green card given to the home team, Cassie Deppner (Burlington, ON, Nelson) took the first shot of the game. Soon after, Justine Laverty (Middleport, NY, Royalton Hartland) took a shot, but it wouldn't make it past the goalie. The Mustangs took the ball back up the field after Laverty's shot, and it ended in a goal at 13:58. It was a tip off of a deflected shot that snuck past goalkeeper Kristyn Clare (Rochester, NY, East Irondequoit). The Mavs finished the quarter trailing 0-1.

The second quarter started out similar to the first. The Mavs had early fouls, and the Mustangs took control of the ball. Clare racked up four saves and Laverty stepped in to make a defensive save in the Mustang's push on offense. The rebound off of Laverty's save was pushed in for the second goal at 20:45. The Mustangs continued to keep possession. At 26:54, the Mavs made their way into Mustang territory, and Deppner took another shot, but it was saved. From that save, the Mustangs took the ball all the way up the field and took their own shot, but it was blocked. At 29:18, the Mavs had their first corner opportunity. Regan Haberl (Clarence, NY, Clarence) took it out, and Deppner took the shot, but it was blocked. They were able to get three more corner opportunities, but they couldn't capitalize before the horn buzzed for halftime. The Mavs were down 0-2.

Just like the first half, it was another early foul, and Mustang shot. Clare made the save, but the Mustangs were given three corners in a row. Each shot was either blocked or saved and the Mavs got themselves out of the situation. The Mustangs were still keeping possession. It wasn't until 38:36 that the Mavs were able to take another shot. It was Deppner again, but she was blocked. Seconds later, they had another corner opportunity, but the ball moved back to Clare in Mavs' territory. After two shots, the Mavs were back on offense and Haberl and Deppner took shots that went wide. After a corner, the Mustangs were given a yellow card, and Morgan Kramer (Sanborn, NY, Starpoint) ended the quarter with a shot on goal. The Mavs were still behind 0-2.

The Mavs started a comeback in the final quarter. It started with early shots from the Mustangs. At 46:33 they scored their final goal of the game off of a corner. They kept possession until the Mavs turned up their offense at 49:28. Kramer and Haberl took back-to-back shots that were both saved. After numerous Maverick fouls, the Mustangs had more shot opportunities, but at 55:26 Haberl put the Mavs on the board. She scored her first goal of the season with a pass from Deppner at the top of the circle. A little over a minute later, the Mavs had a corner opportunity, and Deppner scored their final goal of the game off of a pass from Haberl. Deppner took two more shots before the end, but they were both saved. The Mavs were close to the comeback, but fell short, 3-2.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Deppner with eight shots, five on goal, one goal and one assist, Haberl with three shots, two on goal, one goal and one assist, and Clare in goal with 17 saves.

The Mavs will take to the road again on Saturday, September 10. They will face Oberlin College for a 4:00 p.m. start.
