BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille University field hockey team started their season today with a loss to the SUNY Oswego Lakers. The Mavericks lost 11-0.
The Lakers got started very quickly. Their first goal of the game was scored only 32 seconds in. The Mavs were able to hold them off for three corners with
Kristyn Clare (Rochester, NY, East Irondequoit) recording a save. At 4:27, the Lakers scored their second goal. They were able to hold them off until 12:31, when the Lakers scored again. They scored their final goal of the quarter at 14:09. The Mavs trailed 4-0 going into the second quarter.
The Lakers gained possession of the ball again quickly in the second quarter. At 17:23, Clare had a nice save to get the pressure off of the defense. There was a corner called for the Lakers, and they were able to capitalize and find the back of the goal at 19:28. At 23:33, the scored their sixth goal of the game. The Mavs struggled to get the ball to the Lakers' territory. The final action of the half happened at 26:22 with another goal from the Lakers. The Mavs were down 7-0 at the half.
Coming back from half time, the Mavs were playing better defense. Clare recorded four saves within the first five minutes of the second half. At the 35 minute mark, there was a foul in the circle, and the Lakers were awarded a penalty stroke. The shot went wide and Clare played it well in the goal. She continued to make save after save from there. The Mavs held the Lakers scoreless at the end of the third quarter, but still trailed 7-0.
The Mavs started to find their way into Laker territory in the final quarter. It started with shots fired from the Lakers, but Clare was doing well. At 48:48, they scored their eighth goal. After that goal,
Cassie Deppner (Burlington, ON, Nelson) used her speed. She broke free from defenders and carried a lot of momentum to get a shot off at 51:54. The goalie made the save, but they drew a corner.
Justine Laverty (Middleport, NY, Royalton Hartland) hit the ball in, and the Mavs were passing the ball nicely, but they were not able to get the shot off. At 53:51, the Lakers scored their ninth goal. They would go on to score two more to finish out the game. The Mavs lost 11-0.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Deppner with one shot on goal, and Clare in goal recording 30 saves.
The Mavs will return home on Sunday, September 4 for another non-conference match-up. Transylvania will travel to Buffalo for a 1:00 p.m. start.
