Presidents Grab Conference Victory Over Medaille

Washington & Jefferson College Defeat Medaille 5-0

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Medaille University field hockey team took on the Washington and Jefferson Presidents today at home in their first Empire 8 Conference match. The Mavericks battled until the end, but lost the contest 0-5.

The Presidents put the pressure on right from the start taking 23 shots in the first half. Goalkeeper Kristyn Clare (Rochester, NY, East Irondequoit) made the save on the first shot she faced, but the Presidents capitalized on the rebound to score their first goal of the game. Clare made three more saves before giving up a second goal. With a minute left in the first quarter, the Presidents netted another goal to go up 3-0. The Maverick defense tightened up in the second quarter as Medaille did not allow any goals. Kylie Tolsma (Buffalo, NY, Sweet Home) managed to fire off a shot that just missed wide of the net as the score remained 0-3 going into the half.

The Presidents added their fourth goal four minutes into the third quarter. Cassie Deppner (Burlington, ON, Nelson) charged down the field and put two shots on goal that were saved as Medaille continued to fight. Deppner put two more shots on target in the fourth quarter and Morgan Kramer (Sanborn, NY, Starpoint) had a shot that was blocked, but it was the Presidents who found the back of the net for their fifth goal of the game and secured a 5-0 win.

Deppner led the Mavs taking five total shots with four of the five on goal. Tolsma and Kramer both took shots and Clare finished with 16 saves.

The Mavs return for another home game on Saturday, September 17 where they will face Elmira College at 2:00 p.m.
