ALFRED, N.Y. – The Medaille College baseball team traveled to Alfred State College Tuesday afternoon for their conference doubleheader. The Mavs lost both games, 5-11 and 2-12. The Mavericks record falls to 0-4 in conference play.
Game 1
Josh Wolski (Amherst, NY, Amherst) took the mound for the Mavs to kick off the first inning and the defense held strong keeping the Pioneers scoreless. The Mavs got three runners on base in the top of the second but could not bring anyone in. The Pioneers offense got rolling in the bottom of the second with three singles and a double. Alfred State took the 3-0 lead going into the third.
Ean Pokorski (Amherst, NY, Sweet Home) responded with a double to centerfield and
Aaron Huddleston (Kenmore, NY, Kenmore East) brought him home with an RBI double. The Pioneers would match the Mavericks in the third inning by scoring one run to put them ahead 4-1.
The Pioneers edged out another run in the fourth as Medaille struggled to get on base. The Mavericks would make it count in the fifth inning with a single from
Anthony DeJoseph (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca West). Huddleston came up with a single for his second hit of the game that would drive DeJoseph in for Medaille's second run. The Pioneers retaliated with a double and a single in the bottom of the fifth. The Pioneers took advantage of a couple wild pitches to grab two more runs.
Alfred State took over the sixth inning recording five stolen bases and drove in four runs to take an 11-2 lead. The Mavericks had some success in the top of the seventh with a single from DeJoseph and Huddleston.
Derek Holtz (Akron, NY, Akron) was walked and
Patrick Gavigan (Orchard Park, NY, Orchard Park) hit a three-RBI double as the Mavs trailed 5-11. The comeback fell short for the Mavericks as the Pioneers closed out the inning.
Huddleston led the Mavs going 3-3 with a double, two RBI's, and one run scored. DeJoseph finished 2-4 with two runs scored while Pokorski and Gavigan both hit doubles. Gavigan also had three RBI's. Wolski threw 5.0 innings and faced 21 batters giving up nine hits and seven earned runs.
Game 2
Pokorski got the Mavs started with a single but the Pioneer offense rallied for six runs at the end of the first inning.
Tre LaRue (Olean, NY, Olean) got on base from a hit by pitch and a single from
Alfredo Aponte (Rochester, NY, School of the Arts) scored LaRue for the first Maverick run. The Pioneers earned three more runs in the bottom of the second to lead 9-1.
Both defenses held strong over the next four innings of play as neither team could bring home a run. Pokorski added two singles that the Mavericks could not capitalize on. Pokorski also picked up three strikeouts on the mound with Medaille still trailing 1-9 going into the seventh inning. Aponte came through with a walk and made it to third from two wild pitches.
Samuel Beutler (Cheektowaga, NY, Depew) hit a single to left that scored Aponte for Medaille's second run. The Pioneers hit a homerun and a triple to tack on two more runs and seal a 12-2 victory.
The Mavs were led by Pokorski who went 3-3 while Aponte went 1-2 with an RBI and one run scored. Beutler went 1-3 with a single and LaRue had a run scored. Zach Archibald threw 4.0 innings with Pokorski throwing 2.0.
The Mavericks will return to play at home on Sunday, April 10 against Chatham University. The first game is scheduled for 2:00 P.M. with the second to follow shortly after.
