Redhawks Out-Paced Baseball in First Conference Games

Mavs Swept At Home

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College baseball team started their conference play today against the La Roche Redhawks. The Mavericks lost both games of the double header, 9-1 in game one, and 4-0 in game two.

Game One

The action got started in the third inning. The Redhawks led-off the inning with a double down the right field line. Zach Archibald (North Tonawanda, NY, North Tonawanda) pitched a pop-up, but walked the next batter. A single through the left side to load the bases. A sacrifice fly to center scored the runner from third, and the runner on second advanced. A single to center scored the next runner and now runners were on first and third. A single to Anthony DeJoseph (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca West) at short scored the runner from third, but in a heads up play, Aaron Huddleston (Kenmore, NY, Kenmore East) threw from first to home to get the runner coming home. He made a perfect throw and Patrick Gavigan (Orchard Park, NY, Orchard Park) tagged the runner at the plate to get out of the inning. The Redhawks were in the lead 3-0.

They struck again in the fourth inning. They started it off with another lead-off double. A single to right field put runners on first and third. Archibald got a strikeout in between, but a wild pitch scored the runner from third and put the next runner on third. The next batter was walked on a wild pitch, and another run came in. La Roche extended their lead to 5-0.

The Redhawks finished scoring their runs in the sixth inning. Their first runner got on due to an error at third base. The next one walked, and they had runners on first and second. Archibald pitched a pop-up to DeJoseph, but the next batter doubled to center, and both runners scored. A triple and a passed ball later, the Redhawks scored two more runs, and were in the lead 9-0.

The Mavericks scored their lone run at the bottom of the inning. Derek Holtz (Akron, NY, Akron) beat out a grounder to the shortstop to get a lead-off single. Ean Pokorski (Amherst, NY, Sweet Home) grounded out to third, but advanced Holtz to second. Huddleston reached first due to an errant throw from the pitcher, and Holtz made it to third. Nolan Gallagher (Hamilton, ON, Bishop Tonnos) singled to the shortstop and Holtz made his way home. That would do it and the Mavs lost 9-1.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Gallagher going 1-3 with one RBI, Holtz going 1-3 with one run scored, and Pokorski going 1-3 with a double. Archibald was credited with the loss allowing 10 hits while getting five strikeouts.

Game Two

The Mavericks were working hard in game two to keep the Redhawks from crossing the plate. They stayed 0-0 until the sixth inning. The Redhawks started it off with a single through the left side. They called in a pinch hitter, and he singled through the right side and moved the runner to third. A fielder's choice scored the first run. A few batters later, a single to center scored another run, and the Redhawks took the lead 2-0.

They finished off their scoring in the eighth inning. They got things started with a double to left center. They put a pinch runner on and a double in the same spot scored him. A single to right center scored the last run, and that finished the action. The Mavericks lost 0-4.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Samuel Beutler (Cheektowaga, NY, Depew) going 1-3 with a double and Derek Holtz (Akron, NY, Akron) going 1-3. Holtz was credited with the loss allowing 11 hits and getting five strikeouts.

The Mavericks will continue their conference play on Wednesday, April 6. They will travel to Alfred State for a double header. Game one starts at 1:00 p.m.
