BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medille College women's lacrosse team battled the elements in their non-conference matchup with the Alfred University Saxons. The Mavericks dominated offensively and took the win, 17-3.
The Mavs took the early lead with a free position goal from
Sara Geiser (West Seneca, NY, Mount Mercy Academy). A turnover by the Saxons led to a goal from
Cameron Briggs (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca East).
Katelynn Deveans (Clinton, NY, Clinton) scored 30 seconds later after winning the draw putting the Mavs up 3-0.
Gabi Accurso (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca East) forced a turnover and
Emma Grimm (Watertown, N.Y., Watertown) picked up the ground ball helping the Mavs to another goal from Briggs assisted by Geiser.
Tatiana Wright (Stratford, CT, Bunnell) made back-to-back saves as the Mavericks held a strong lead. Geiser took another goal in by herself and Deveans scored her second of the game off of a free position shot. With 16 seconds left in the first quarter, Geiser scored again beating the goaltender with a backhand shot.
Wright earned an assist to kick off the second quarter with a long pass down field to
Kara Anderson (Mississauga, ON, Lorne Park Secondary) who scored the Maverick's eighth goal of the game. Less than a minute later,
Irelyne Tarbell (Akwesasne, NY, Salmon River) connected with Briggs for a goal to put Medaille ahead 9-0. The Saxons got on the board in the middle of the quarter scoring two goals. The Mavs responded with two goals before half with Deveans scoring from a free position shot and Briggs scoring Medaille's 11
th goal assisted by Geiser.
The first four minutes of the third quarter went scoreless until Briggs found the back of the net from a quick pass by Geiser. The Mavericks held their 12-2 lead until the Saxons' third goal following a Maverick turnover. Less than a minute later, Briggs scored from a free position shot and then added another goal with 28 seconds left in the third.
Erin Hardick (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart) took one up the field by herself for Medaille's 15
th goal of the game. The Mavericks played well on defense forcing turnovers and preventing the Saxons from gaining any scoring opportunities. Deveans went on to score off of a free position shot with 2:13 left to play and then a goal from Geiser assisted by Briggs finished the game with a 17-3 Maverick win.
Briggs led the charge with seven goals and an assist while picking up eight ground balls, forcing three turnovers, and recorded seven draw controls. Geiser also had a strong game picking up four goals and three assists with four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Deveans scored four goals with five ground balls and eight draw controls. Anderson and Hardick both scored a goal with Tarbell and Wright picking up assists. Wright finished the game with seven saves and seven ground balls.
The Mavs will travel to La Roche University on Friday, April 22 for their next game starting at 3:00 P.M.
