Baseball Drops Two to Keuka

Nolan Gallagher Hits First Homerun on the New Field

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College baseball team dropped two games to the Keuka College Wolves today. The Mavericks lost 18-2 in game one, and 8-1 in game two.

Game One

The game started off with the Mavericks getting two outs. The Wolves went on a hot streak, stringing together five hits, with one walk and an error to get them six runs before their final out. The Mavs had a lot of work to do. Ean Pokorski (Amherst, NY, Sweet Home) got to first base on a single to the shortstop, and Aaron Huddleston (Kenmore, NY, Kenmore East) made his way on due to an error. The Mavs couldn't get them around, and stayed down 6-0 after one inning.

The Wolves were quiet in the second inning, but put some more runs on the board in the third. A double and single got things started. Patrick Gavigan (Orchard Park, NY, Orchard Park) came up throwing from behind the plate, and picked off the runner at first base to get the first out of the inning. Unfortunately, a play later, the Wolves scored on a passed ball. This would quickly turn into six more runs scored, and the Mavs had a big deficit to come back from.

In the fourth inning, the Wolves scored one more run. At the bottom of the inning, the very first homerun on the new field was hit. Nolan Gallagher (Hamilton, ON, Bishop Tonnos) hit a deep shot right next to the left field line over the fence. The bases were empty, and Gallagher scored the only run of the inning.

Another run scored for the Wolves at the top of the fifth inning. The Mavericks answered back with their own in the bottom of the inning. Derek Holtz (Akron, NY, Akron) was the lead-off and doubled to left center field. Pokorski was on deck and singled to right field, moving Holtz to third. Huddleston hit a sacrifice fly to score Holtz from third. That would finish out the runs for the Mavs.

The Wolves tacked on four more runs in the top of the seventh, with no answer from the Mavericks, and they took game one 18-2.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Gallagher going 1-2 with the homerun, one RBI and one run scored, Holtz going 1-3 with a double and one run scored, and Pokorski who went 3-4. Quinton Jordan (Olean, NY, Olean) was credited with the loss. He allowed 11 hits while getting two strikeouts. Samuel Beutler (Cheektowaga, NY, Depew) entered in the fourth inning and allowed five hits while getting two strikeouts.

Game Two

The Wolves jumped on the board in the first inning again. The game was started with a lead-off walk. The runner went to second on third on a passed ball and a wild pitch. The next batter walked on a wild pitch, and the runner on third scored. A ground out and single scored that runner, and the Wolves were ahead 2-0.

They scored another run in the third inning. They got things started with a double to left field. A ground out to Gallagher at second advanced the runner to third. A bobbled ball at first helped to score the Wolves third run of the game. Two fielder's choices at second base ended the inning. The Mavericks answered back in the bottom of the inning. Pokorski singled through the right side of the field on two outs. Huddleston singled down the right field line and moved Pokorski to third base. Tyler Siwek (Hamburg, NY, Hamburg) got himself a single through the right side and scored Pokorski from third. This would be the only run scored for the Mavericks.

The Wolves put up three more runs in the fourth inning, one more in the seventh, and their final run in the seventh to win the game 8-1.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Siwek going 1-2 with one RBI, Pokorski going 1-4 with one run scored, and Gavigan going 1-1. Josh Wolski (Amherst, NY, Amherst) was credited with the loss. He pitched all seven innings allowing seven hits and had four strikeouts.

The Mavericks will begin AMCC play on Saturday, April 2. They will face La Roche at home for a double header, starting at 1:00 p.m.
