Errors Decide First Home Game for the Mavs

Hilbert Takes Down Baseball in Nine Innings

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College baseball team had their home opener against the Hilbert Hawks. It was a single nine-inning game. The Mavericks lost 11-3.

The game got started with multiple Maverick errors. The Hawks' lead-off hitting got on base on an errant throw. The next batter was hit by a pitch. Both runners scored on another Maverick error. One more run scored, and a ground out put one more run on the board for the Hawks. They got off to a four run lead early.

The Mavericks scored their first run of the game in the third inning. Anthony DeJoseph (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca West) singled to center field to get things started. A high pop-up in windy conditions, forced an error for the Hawks, and Derek Holtz (Akron, NY, Akron) made his way to first. Aaron Huddleston (Kenmore, NY, Kenmore East) hit a grounder to short that was thrown to second. Holtz was out on the play and DeJoseph advanced to second, while Huddleston stayed on first. Tyler Siwek (Hamburg, NY, Hamburg) hit a single to right field, and brought DeJoseph in. The Mavericks trailed 1-4.

The Hawks answered back with another run the next inning. Their lead-off batter walked to put their first runner on base. Another Maverick error advanced the runner to third. A deep sacrifice fly to centerfield scored the runner from third. The Hawks extended their lead to 5-1.

After a Hawks' pitching change in the sixth inning, the Mavericks put some more runs on the board. Nolan Gallagher (Hamilton, ON, Bishop Tonnos) led off with a single. Alfredo Aponte (Rochester, NY, School of the Arts) was up next and walked. With two outs, Holtz doubled to left field, driving in both Gallagher and Aponte. This would do it for the Mavericks' runs.

The Hawks would go on to score four more runs in the seventh inning, and one more in the ninth to finish things out. The Mavericks took their first loss on their new turf field, 11-3.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Holtz going 2-5 with two RBI's, Siwek going 1-4 with one RBI, and Gallagher going 2-3 with one run scored. Holtz was credited with the loss allowing four hits with five strikeouts.

The Mavericks will travel to Keuka College on Wednesday, March 30 for their next games. Game one will start at 1:00 p.m.
