BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille University field hockey team took down the Wells College Express tonight in an exciting game under the lights. The Mavericks won 5-2.
The Express started things early. As soon as the whistle was blown to start the game, they went right down the field with the ball. They took their first shot at 35 second and
Kristyn Clare (Rochester, NY, East Irondequoit) made the stop, but one second later, off of the rebound, the Express put one in past her. The Mavs found themselves behind quick. They made their way up the field after the goal and had two corners in a row.
Justine Laverty (Middleport, NY, Royalton Hartland) was able to get a shot off on the first one, but they were unable to do the same on the second. Fouls kept the game at mid field, but the Mavericks were keeping possession the longest.
Cassie Deppner (Burlington, ON, Nelson) broke out in the middle of the field and took her first shot, but it was saved.
Cassandra Diodate (East Amherst, NY, Williamsville North) shot off of the rebound, but it went wide. Once the Mavs brought the ball back into the arc,
Kelsi Miles (Elma, NY, Iroquois), in her first home game since joining the team, scored to tie the game at 11:49.
Kendall Wier (Buffalo, NY, West Seneca East) would take one more shot before the quarter ended, but it was saved. It was a 1-1 game.
The Express got the ball to begin the quarter, and it looked like it might be a similar start for them. Fouls slowed them down, and they were not able to get to the goal. The Mavs took the ball back and were able to get a corner one minute into the quarter.
Kylie Tolsma (Buffalo, NY, Sweet Home) took the shot that was blocked, but it gave the Mavs another corner opportunity. Tolsma took another shot, but this one went wide, and the ball made its way out of the arc. At 19:08, the Mavs were back in and got another corner. This time it was Diodate that took the shot, but that went wide left. The Mavs were keeping it in the arc and got three shots off in a row, but none made it into the goal. Laverty and
Morgan Kramer (Sanborn, NY, Starpoint) were able to get one more shot off each before the half, but were not successful. Going into halftime, the score remained tied at 1-1.
Coming off of halftime the Mavs found their quick start off of the whistle. They were able to bring it down the field in 30 seconds and got a corner opportunity off of it. Laverty took the shot, but it went too high and was called for a foul. Deppner was able to steal the ball away and go in for a shot, but the Express goalie was able to make a great save. At 33:46, Deppner went in again for a shot but was stuffed. This turned into a foul on Wells, and the Mavs had another corner opportunity.
Regan Haberl (Clarence, NY, Clarence) passed the ball in, and was given the ball back to take the shot but it went wide. Deppner was able to find the back of the goal two minutes later, and the Mavs found their lead. They gained a ton of momentum and took the ball straight up the field off of the whistle. Miles was able to find Wier at the post, and Wier put it in for the Mavs third of the game. The Express were feeling the deficit and marched down the field once they got the ball back. They got their first corner at 38 minutes and took a shot, but Kramer was able to get in front of it. They got another corner seconds later, and they were able to find their way around Clare for their second goal of the night. Both teams were able to get one more shot off before the third quarter ticked down, but neither went in. The Mavs were leading 3-2.
The Mavs would give the fatal blow in the final quarter of play. Miles took a shot three minutes in but it went wide. Wier, Deppner, and Laverty got shots off of rebounds. Deppner was the last to touch off of a rebound and scored her second of the night. Laverty gave her the ball for the assist. They scored their final goal at 54:21, and it was Diodate sitting on the post waiting for the ball from Miles. This would finish it up, and the Mavs won 5-2.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Deppner with two goals on eight shots on goal, Miles with one goal and two assists, and Clare in goal with two saves.
The Mavericks will get some rest this week, and will play again on Wednesday, October 12. They will travel to SUNY Brockport for a 7:00 p.m. start.
