Mavs Wrap Up Season With Loss to Hartwick

Diodate Makes Three Defensive Saves to Close Out the Year

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille University field hockey team finished out their season with a loss to the Hartwick Hawks. The Mavericks lost 7-1.

The Hawks started things off right away getting the ball down the field. At one minute in, they had their first corner. They were able to get three shots off of the corner, but goalie Kristyn Clare (Rochester, NY, East Irondequoit) was there to stop the first two, the last one went wide. They were keeping control of the ball for the entire first quarter. The Hawks had another corner opportunity at 7:16 that resulted in some shots, but nothing got by Clare. The Mavs held them off 0-0 at the end of the quarter.

The Hawks gained control of the ball to begin the second quarter, but a foul gave the ball to the Mavs. Cassie Deppner (Burlington, ON, Nelson) grabbed the ball and had a fast break to the goal. She went up the middle and put the ball away for a goal just one minute and a half into the quarter. The Mavs took the lead. The Hawks got the ball back and immediately went down the field with it. They took two shots and got another corner. The shot from that went wise. At 22:13 they got another corner, and seconds later the Hawks put their first goal past Clare. It didn't take long for them to get their offense going again, and at 22:59, the Hawks took the lead. At 23:23 the Mavs got their first corner of the game, but it ended in a foul. Kylie Tolsma (Buffalo, NY, Sweet Home) was able to get the ball back in the arc to take a shot, but it went wide. From there, the Hawks took the ball back down the field and scored their third of the game. They had lots of shots after, but none went it. The Mavs went into halftime down 1-3.

The Hawks kept their momentum going after halftime. After two Maverick fouls the Hawks brought the ball in and got a quick corner 47 seconds in. They had two more in a row, but did not score. The offense stayed in the arc and at 39:45, the Hawks scored their fourth of the game. They managed to get one more shot off, but Cassandra Diodate (East Amherst, NY, Williamsville North) got in there to make the defensive save. They Mavs were down 1-4 going into the final quarter.

The Hawks started off the final quarter with a goal 26 seconds in. One minute and a half later, they scored their sixth. At 49:57 Deppner was able to get the ball back into the Hawks' territory, but they made a great defensive save. At 53:28, the Hawks scored their final goal. Three minutes later, the Mavs had corner to get a chance to close the gap, but Justine Laverty (Middleport, NY, Royalton Hartland)'s shot didn't go in. The Mavs lost 1-7.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Deppner with one goal on two shots on goal, Diodate with three defensive save, and Clare in goal with 14 saves.

This would finish out the season for the Mavericks. There were no seniors on the team to say goodbye to, so they will look ahead to next season!
