UTICA, N.Y. – The Medaille University field hockey team squared off with Empire 8 foe Utica University on Saturday. The Mavs dropped the conference match losing 1-7.
The Maverick defense blocked a shot early in the first quarter before the Pioneers scored three-straight goals. The Mavs blocked another shot and goaltender
Kristyn Clare (Rochester, NY, East Irondequoit) made her first save of the game at the conclusion of the quarter.
With a minute into the second quarter,
Cassie Deppner (Burlington, ON, Nelson) had a shot on target that was saved. Clare tallied two more saves and
Olivia Carr (West Falls, NY, East Aurora) had a shot that was just wide of the net. The Pioneers found the back of the net with five seconds left in the quarter to go up 4-0.
Deppner added another shot on goal in the third and Clare added another save. Despite a strong effort from the Mavs defensively, the Pioneers added another goal to go up 5-0.
Utica picked up two more goals in the fourth, but Deppner's effort came through as she scored with only seconds left in the game.
Depppner led the Mavs with one goal and three shots on goal. Carr had one shot and Clare made four saves in the loss.
The Mavs return to action on Wednesday, October 26 for a road game versus Houghton College. The game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
