BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille University field hockey team suffered a very cold and rainy loss to the Nazareth Golden Flyers tonight. The Mavericks lost 0-5.
The Golden Flyers were aggressive right away. At 1:34 they got their first corner that ended in a shot, but
Kristyn Clare (Rochester, NY, East Irondequoit) was able to make the save. They were able to get three more corners within two minutes, but those shots were all saved. They fouled inside the circle so the Mavs could take the ball out, but they were able to get the ball back. At 4:38, the Golden Flyers brought the ball straight in and scored their first goal of the game. They got three more shots off before the half, but they were unsuccessful. The Mavs were down 0-1 going into the second quarter.
Just like the first quarter, the Nazareth offense was off to another aggressive start. They were given a corner this time two minutes in, but their shot went wide. After a Mavs foul, they took the ball back in and scored off a pass from the top of the circle. The Mavs were down 0-2. At 28:28 and 29:24, the Golden Flyers had two successful shots to really pull away with the lead. The Mavs went into halftime down 0-4.
The Mavs were able to hold off the scoring in the third quarter. Their offense got started at 33:36, where they had their first corner opportunity. They didn't get a clean reception off of the pass to get a shot off, and the ball came out of the circle. After numerous shots, the Mavs brought the ball back up the field and had their second corner at 39:58.
Justine Laverty (Middleport, NY, Royalton Hartland) passed the ball to
Kylie Tolsma (Buffalo, NY, Sweet Home) who took a great shot to the left side of the goal, but the Golden Flyers defense was able to get a defensive save. They took the ball all the way down the field from there to get a corner, but it ended in a foul to finish the quarter. The Mavs were still down 0-4.
The Golden Flyers were not letting up and began with more corners and shots. At 52:48, Laverty took a hard high shot that was saved. Minutes later, the Golden Flyers scored their final goal of the evening. The Mavs were unable to generate any more offense, and they finished with a 0-5 loss.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Laverty and Tolsma with one shot on goal each, and Clare in goal with 12 saves.
The Mavs will take to the road for their Empire 8 game this weekend. They will travel to Utica University on Saturday, October 22. They will start at 5:00 p.m.
