KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – The Medaille University field hockey team suffered a loss to Empire 8 opponent, the Keuka Wolves. The Mavericks lost 0-4.
Things started in the Maverick arc with a Keuka corner one minute in. They got a shot off of it, but
Kristyn Clare (Rochester, NY, East Irondequoit) was able to stop it. The Wolves were given another corner, but a foul took the ball out. Four minutes later, Keuka brought the ball back in and got a corner. They took two shots off. One went wide, the second was saved by Clare again. The Mavs defense was getting plenty of work, and at 7:18, the Wolves scored their first goal off of another corner. They had two more corners, and the second one ended in their second goal of the quarter. The ball stayed in Mavs territory until the quarter ended. The Mavs were down 0-2.
They were able to hold Keuka scoreless in the second quarter. The ball stayed in the middle of the field for the most part. Keuka got a corner opportunity at 25:57 with a shot, but it went wide. The rest of the half was fouls, and the Mavs went into halftime still down 0-2.
Quick after halftime, Keuka put their third goal on the board. A foul on the Mavs gave the Wolves the ball and they took it in to score at 33:21. The ball stayed in the Mavs end for the rest of the quarter. The Wolves has two more corner opportunities and took some shots, but the quarter ended with the Mavs trailing 0-3.
In the final quarter of play, the Wolves got off to the same start as the third quarter. They went right down to score their final goal of the game just minutes in. This is the quarter where the Mavs finally made their way into the arc on offense.
Cassie Deppner (Burlington, ON, Nelson) took the first shot for the Mavs at 52:43 and
Skylar Ellis (Aurora, CO, Surfside Educational Academy) was able to take a shot off of Deppner's rebound, but both would not make it in the goal. The same thing happened three minutes later, but they still could not get the goal. The Mavs lost 0-3.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Deppner with two shots on goal, Ellis with two shots on goal, and goalie Clare with six total saves.
The Mavericks will return home on Tuesday, October 18. Nazareth College will make the trip for a 6:00 p.m. start.
