PITTSBURGH, PA – The Medaille baseball team officially opened up play within the AMCC Tournament for the first time since 2015 on Saturday. The day would end in the Mavericks being eliminated in the quarterfinals by La Roche University with the Redhawks winning the first two games in the best-of-three series.
The Mavs struggled in both games generating offense but starting pitcher
John Dref (Buffalo, NY, Da Vinci) would keep them in the game, pitching all six innings in game one. Dref would allow seven earned runs while striking out two. However, the Mavs would collect just two hits, coming off the bat of
Shawn Filas (Hamburg, NY, Hamburg) and
Zach Archibald (North Tonawanda, NY, North Tonawanda).
The Mavs would come away from game two having seven hits, but that wouldn't be enough as they failed to capitalize with runners on base, leaving eight runners on as a team.
The Mavs lone run came from a Filas base hit, scoring
Anthony DeJoseph (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca West) in the sixth inning. However, the Mavs would drop the second game 8-1, ending their 2021 season.
DeJoseph and
Patrick Whelan (West Seneca, NY, Bishop Timon) both had two hits in the back-end of the double-header.
The Mavs will now look to get back in to the AMCC Tournament in 2022 after having their first appearance since 2015.
