LEWISTON, NY – The Medaille baseball team dropped two conference games to Mount Aloysius College on Saturday. Saturday was originally scheduled to be played at McCarthy Park but due to field conditions from the recent snow, today's Senior Day was held at Bobo Field on the campus of Niagara University.
The Mavs quickly fell into a deficit in game one after the Mounties tallied five runs through the first two innings including a four-run first frame.
In the bottom of the third,
Andrew Schaffstall (Orchard Park, NY, Orchard Park) would lay down a bunt with
Jordeyn Lewis (Dallas, GA, Allatoona) on second and would reach safely and advance to second on a throwing error. Lewis would score on the play, being the first Mav to do so in game one.
The Mavs would plate one home in the fourth with senior
Zach Archibald (North Tonawanda, NY, North Tonawanda) reaching on an error.
Nolan Gallagher (Hamilton, ON, Bishop Tonnos) would score and it would be the first RBI of Archibald's career.
The Mountie sticks got hot as game one was coming to an end and would down the Mavs in the front end of the double-header 11-2.
The second game saw the same start as the first with the Mounties scoring seven in the first two innings. The Mavericks would respond in the bottom of the second earning two back.
With the bases loaded,
Patrick Whelan (West Seneca, NY, Bishop Timon) would rope a single up the middle, scoring Lewis and
Alfredo Aponte (Rochester, NY, School of the Arts).
In the fourth, Schaffstall would drive a ball to the gab but would result in a sacrifice fly with
Patrick Gavigan (Orchard Park, NY, Orchard Park) tagging on the play to score. Whelan would strike with runners on once more, driving a ball to the outfield scoring Lewis.
In the eighth inning, Schaffstall would bring home another run on an RBI-single with Gavigan scoring but would be the Mavs last run, falling to the Mounties again 12-6.
Lewis led the Mavs in hits, totaling four hits in eight at-bats between the two games. He also scored four times. Whelan would pick up two more hits and drive in a total of three runs with Schaffstall collecting two hits as well.
