Mavericks topped by Hilbert

Medaille falls twice in final conference matchup

BUFFALO, NY – The Medaille Mavericks Baseball team returned to action Tuesday afternoon to wrap up their home games. They were slated to take on conference rival Hilbert College. The Mavs entered play with a record of (12-17) and a conference record of (5-11).

Game One

Peter Grunzweig (Buffalo, NY, CSAT) got the start on the mound for Medaille in game one.

Hilbert got the scoring started early in this one. They struck for (2) runs in the top of the first and (1) more in the top of the third.

Power had (2) RBIs in game one.

The Mavs answered back in the bottom of the third. Tom Lunghino (Buffalo, NY, Kenmore West) started it with a single and Stephen Kemp (Rochester, NY, Brighton) reached on an error. On the error Lunghino made it all the way to third. Jared McStine (Endicott, NY, Union-Endicott) singled and scored Lunghino from third. Greg Power (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville) singled and scored Kemp and the Mavs now trailed (3-2).

Hilbert added another run in the fifth inning to take a (4-2) lead.

Medaille got one back in the bottom of the sixth. Wojcinski walked and he scored on a sac fly by Sal Carroccia (Lackawanna, NY, St. Francis). The score now sat at (4-3) in favor of Hilbert.

In the top of the seventh inning Hilbert went up big on Medaille. They scored (3) to hold a (7-3) lead entering the bottom of the inning.

Lunghino and Kemp walked and McStine singled. Dominick Teoli (Niagara Falls, NY, St. Joe's) reached on a fielder's choice and scored Lunghino from third. Ryan Wojcinski (North Tonawanda, NY, Cardinal O'Hara) came up next and he doubled to score both Teoli and Kemp. Greg Power singled to score Wojcinski and the Mavs tied it up at (7).

Hilbert would ultimately emerge victorious in this one by a score of (8-7). They scored a run in the top of the tenth and shut the Mavs down in the bottom half of the inning.

Wojcinski was (2-3) with (2) runs scored and (2) RBIs. Power went (2-4) with (2) RBIs of his own.

Game Two

Sal Carroccia got the start on the bump for Medaille in game two.

Hilbert struck first in this one. They scored (2) in the top of the fourth inning to take a (2-0) lead over Medaille.

Napolitano had an RBI in game two.

In the bottom of the fourth inning Medaiile scratched one across. Joe Napolitano (Millerton, NY, Housatonic Valley) singled and scored Dominick Teoli from third. Medaille now trailed (2-1).

Hilbert answered back with another run of their own in the top of the fifth and led Medaille (3-2).

The Mavs got one back in the bottom of the sixth when Teoli tripled and Wojcinski singled him home.

This would not be enough as Hilbert would go on to defeat the Mavs by a score of (3-2).

Napolitano and Wojcinski had the lone RBIs in the game for the Mavs.

Medaille now drops to (12-19) overall and (5-13) in conference.

The Mavs will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Elmira, NY to close out their season.
