LEWISTON, NY – The Medaille Baseball team was back in action Wednesday for their home opener against Penn-State Behrend. The game was moved from its original location at McCarthy Park to Washuta Park in Lewiston, NY. The Mavs entered play with a record of (9-6) and a conference record of (2-0).
Game One
Peter Grunzweig (Buffalo, NY, CSAT) got the ball in game one for the Mavs.
The Lions came out of the gate hot and put up (2) runs on the Mavs early.
Wojcinski went deep in game one.
In the top of the third inning Behrend put up (4) runs on the Mavs and staked themselves to a (6-0) lead.
The Lions added (2) more runs in the top of the fourth inning and led the Mavs (8-0) going into the bottom of the fourth.
The Mavs got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning off a Ryan Wojcinski (North Tonawanda, NY, Cardinal O'Hara) homerun. Behrend led the Mavs (8-1) after four full innings.
In the top of the fifth inning Behrend put up (7) runs on (6) hits and (1) Medaille error. The Lions led the Mavs (15-1) after the top of the fifth inning.
Behrend added (3) more runs in the top of the sixth and led (18-1).
In the bottom of the sixth inning Greg Power (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville) doubled. He stole third and scored on a wild pitch. The Mavs trailed (18-2) after six full.
That would be it for this one as Behrend emerged victorious by a score of (18-2).
Peter Grunzweig dropped to (3-3) on the season with the loss. Wojcinski had the only RBI in the game off his solo homerun.
Game Two
Steven Hostinsky (Rochester Hills, MI, Stoney Creek) got the call on the mound in game two for the Mavs.
Behrend got the scoring started in the top of the second inning. They scored (3) runs and led the Mavs (3-0).
Behrend added (3) more runs in the top of the third and now led (6-0).
The Mavs got on the board in the bottom of the third. Paul Barker (Niagara Falls, NY, Niagara Falls) singled and advanced to second on an error. He then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout. They now trailed (6-1).
The Mavs got back on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Dominick Teoli (Niagara Falls, NY, St. Joe's) got things started with a double. Wojcinski grounded out to the shortstop and Teoli got caught in a rundown. He was tagged out but Wojcinski advanced to second on the play. Greg Power came up next and doubled home Wojcinski. Next up was Shawn Filas (Hamburg, NY, Hamburg) and he singled which scored Power from second. The Mavs now trailed (6-3).
Barker was (1-2) in game two with (2) walks and a run scored.
Behrend added one more run in the top of the seventh inning. The Mavs now trailed (7-3).
In the top of the eights the Lions scored (1) more run and led the Mavs (8-3).
Behrend added (3) runs in the top of the ninth and now led (11-3).
Stephen Kemp (Rochester, NY, Brighton) opened the ninth inning with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. He then scored on a wild pitch. Connor Priester (North Tonawanda, NY, North Tonawanda) came up and singled. Evan Dunning (Ilion, NY, Central Valley) came in to pinch run for Priester. Jared McStine (Endicott, NY, Union-Endicott) walked and Dominick Teoli singled. Ryan Wojcinski came up next and singled, which scored two. The comeback fell short and the Mavs lost (11-6).
Steve Hostinsky takes the loss in game two, dropping to (1-1) on the year.
Paul Barker was (1-2) in game two with two walks and a run scored. Dominick Teoli smacked a double for the Mavs. Filas, Power, and McStine each had an RBI while Wojcinski had (2).
Power was (4-8) on the day for the Mavs. Wojcinski knocked in 3 RBIs on the day.
The Mavs will be back in action Friday when they take on Pitt-Greensburg in another conference matchup.
