Senior Travis Chavanne went (1-4) with (1) RBI, (1) walk, and (2) runs scored
BUFFALO, NY – The Medaille College Baseball team celebrated the careers of three amazing seniors on Sunday afternoon when they hosted the Pioneers of Alfred State on Senior Day at McCarthy Park. Seniors
TJ Serba (Tonawanda, NY, Sweet Home) and
Travis Chavanne (Cheektowaga, NY, West Seneca East) combined for (3) hits, (4) runs scored, and (4) RBI; while fellow senior
Nate Labenski (Lancaster, NY, St. Mary's) collected his first win of the season as the Mavericks split the double header with Alfred State.
Game one saw Alfred State strike first, putting up six runs in the top half of the second to take an early lead. However the Medaille bats wouldn't stay silent for long, getting on the board when Serba reached on a fielder's choice and scored freshman
Connor Priester (North Tonawanda, NY, North Tonawanda) to get Medaille their first run of the game.
The game one comeback was in full motion in the bottom of the fourth, with the blue and gold plating three more runs to make it a (6-4) game. After a
Daniel Luppens (Wading River, NY, Shoreham Wading River) double got the Mavs in scoring position, sophomore
Jared McStine (Endicott, NY, Union-Endicott) smacked a triple to bring Luppens home.
Junior
Kyle Powell (Haddon Heights, NJ, Haddon Heights ) made it two triples in a row switching spots with McStine, cutting the Pioneers lead to three. The lead dwindles to two when
Dan Lumadue (Buffalo, NY, Williamsville East) earned an RBI with a ground out to short, scoring Powell and making it a (6-4) ballgame.
McStine hit yet another triple in the bottom half of the sixth, later scoring on a Powell sac fly to get the deficit to just one; however, time ran out on the Mavs as they fell (6-5) in the seven inning affair.
Senior TJ Serba had (2) hits, (2) walks, (2) RBI, and (2) runs scored Sunday.
After coming on in relief in the third, junior
Andrew Pierino (Getzville, NY, Williamsville North) pitched exceptionally well. Pierino went (5.0) scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and striking out a season high four batters.
Game two started with Labenski on the mound for the Mavs, earning his first start of the season for the blue and gold. He started game two with four scoreless innings, giving up just three hits and striking out three Pioneers. He found himself in some trouble in the fifth, but not until his offense spotted him (16) runs to work with.
Labenski got his first win of the season and second of his career to go along with his win against Lesley University on March 9, 2014.
As for his teammates, they gave Labenski plenty of run support by putting up (16) runs in the first four innings. It started with a (9) run first that started off with a
Kris Kruszka (Gowanda, NY, Gowanda)a three run home run, and ended with a Serba two-run bomb both over the left field fence. It was Kruszka's fourth of the season and Serba's third, as the Medaille bats continued to stay hot after game one.
Chavanne,
Ryan Cooper (Elbridge, NY, Jordan-Elbridge), and
Franky Vazquez (Valley Stream, NY, Valley Stream) also earned at least one RBI in the first inning.
Dan Lumadue (Buffalo, NY, Williamsville East) got in on the party in the bottom of the second, singling home Powell to give Medaille a (10) run cushion.
The third inning saw Luppens drive in two more runs, plating Kruszka and Chavanne to make it (12-0). That lead increased to (14) when Vazquez reached on an error by the Alfred State second baseman, allowing Powell and Luppens to score.
Senior Nate Labenski earned the second win of his career against Alfred State.
In the fourth it was Powell driving in the runs instead of scoring them, smacking a two-run single to score Luppens and Kruszka making it (16-0).
The Pioneers turned up the offense in the fifth and sixth, but it wasn't enough as Medaille took their final game of 2016 (17-9). Eight of the nine Mavericks in the lineup earned at least one RBI in the game two victory; with all nine crossing home plate.
The win improved Medaille's record to (10-24) overall as they closed out the 2016 season.
