Junior Calvin Crosby led Medaille offensivley with (9) kills and (5) service aces.BUFFALO, NY – The Medaille Men's Volleyball team hosted NEAC rival Hilbert College on Wednesday evening, looking for win number four in a row to start off conference play. The Hawks gave Medaille everything they had, but it was the Mavs claiming victory in straight sets (3-0; 25-23, 25-19, 25-22).
Set number one was full of runs by both teams, as Hilbert started the match on fire. After four straight points by the Hawks it was Medaille's turn, as the Mavs rallied with four straight points of their own to tie it at four.
Neither side really took command of the opening set; however, a (5-0) run by Hilbert turned a (16-19) deficit into a (21-19) lead late. Junior
Calvin Crosby (Pendleton, NY, Starpoint)y stepped up in a huge way to ensure the opening set victory for the Mavs. Crosby registered two kills and a set clinching service ace to give Medaille the (25-23) win.
Set number two was evenly matched throughout; it wasn't until late in the set that the Mavs took control.
After the Hawks knotted it up at (18), Medaille finished the set on a (7-1) run to go up a commanding (2-0). This time it was senior
Nate Schneider (Lockport, NY, Lockport) with a pair of kills and a set clinching ace, as Medaille looked to sweep Hilbert for the second time this season.
They were able to complete the sweep; leading throughout the third set en route to a (25-22) victory.
Junior
Pete McKelvey (Buffalo, NY, Canisius), who is (19) in the nation in hitting percentage (.368), had another impressive day with (6) kills and a hitting percentage of (.556). Senior
Joe Hacherl (Tonawanda, NY, St, Joseph's CI), who is (26) in the country with (2.38) digs per set, led Medaille with a season-high (17) digs, in another outstanding team effort for the Mavs.
Crosby finished with (9) kills and (5) service aces, as Medaille improved to (8-3) overall and (4-0) in NEAC play.
The Mavs will be off until next Wednesday, when they will host the Spartans of D'Youville College in the Sullivan Center at 7:00pm.
