Medaille Men Stellar; Roll Past Rival Penn State-Behrend
Bookmark and Share

BUFFALO, NY - The Medaille College men's basketball team had a game for the ages in their (89-72) victory over rival Penn State-Behrend.  At times it looked as though the Mavs were putting on a shooting clinic as they diced up the nets from all areas of the hardwood.  The Mavs shooters were relentless throughout the key AMCC victory.

From the opening tip it was obvious that both teams were firing on all cylinders.  Unfortunately for the Lions the Mavs had an extra gear this evening as they torched the nets, connecting on a remarkable (69.6%) of their field goal attempts; and even more impressively knocking down (61.5%) of their attempts from behind the arc.  The Mavs finished one three pointer shy of the program record as they drilled (16) long range shots in tonight's victory.

The visiting Lions were adept from the floor as well, connecting on (56.5%) of their shots while knocking down half of their attempts from downtown.  But the story of the day was the Maverick offense as they continued to share the basketball, to the tune of (25) assists on (32) buckets.  Five Mavericks registered double digits in scoring and ten total players tallied points in the win.

Leading the way for Medaille was David Shuey who went (6 for 7) from the floor and (3 for 4) from the line for a team high (15) points.  He was followed closely behind by Phil Maiarana who connected on (3 of 4) from behind the arc for (14) points along with a five assist performance.  Both Angel Flores and Jammal Coleman knocked down all three of their long range shots en route to (11) point days with Flores also dishing out a game high (8) eight assists while committing just one turnover.

The Mavs depth continues to be an issue for opposing teams as they outscored Behrend's reserves (38-27).  Junior Josh Laureano continues to make an impact off the bench.  This evening Laureano dealt five assists, several of which were of the highlight reel variety.  Another key contributor off the bench was Alex Baron who was (4 for 5) from the floor, including (2 of 3) from three point range, finishing with (10) points.  Sean Bellomo led the Mavs with five rebounds and a game high four blocked shots.

The win pushes the Mavs to (15-2) overall and keeps them atop the AMCC standings with a (9-1) mark.  They have now won three straight and six of their last seven.  They will look to stay hot when they host Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday (1/21) at 2:00pm.
